First of all, thanks for finding your way here. My name is Melissa and I am a full-time mother and midnight writer living on the West Coast of British Columbia. I like yoga, books, being in nature, weekend adventuring with my family, wine nights with friends, and questioning the status quo. In terms of dreams and goals...well, I'm currently just trying to crush my last high score on Bop It.
I have worked professionally with high-risk youth for the past 11 years, but in my spare time, I enjoy writing poetry and prose that illuminate the ongoing struggles of the soul. I am drawn towards writing pieces that cut through the cacophony of our modern existence by narrowing in on universal truths about life and death. And, with open eyes, examining the glaring inequalities and hypocrisy that we all must contend with on the journey. This is sometimes uncomfortable, but always, always necessary.
My greatest writing inspiration at this crux of my life comes in the form of the simple, yet incredibly profound moments, questions, and answers that emerge as I raise my two children. You'll find a little bit of everything here: hope, cynicism, beauty, pain, hilarity and rage, unapologetic grief, unbounded joy, bursts of light and moments of darkness, and the whimsy found in ordinary moments. Life is full of juxtapositions and contortions, as it were. As the great Walt Whitman once wrote, "do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself. (I am large, I contain multitudes.)"
That's me in a nutshell. But if you stick around, you'll be privy to it all. I'm thrilled that you chose to spend a few minutes of your day here nonetheless, and I hope you find something worthwhile to take with you when you go.
